Green Skincare: A Fresh Era of Natural Beauty

In recent years, as awareness of health and environmental impact grows, green skincare has become a rising trend in the beauty industry. Gone are the days of limited choices and rough formulas—today’s natural products are not only safer but also highly effective. From masks and eye oils to foundations and hair dyes, eco-friendly options are more accessible than ever.

The Evolution of Natural Skincare

Cris Robinson, co-founder of Purple Carrot Health Foods & Wellness, recalls that over a decade ago, finding natural beauty products was a real challenge. “The only eyeliner available back then felt like drawing on your face with a colored pencil,” she says.

Today, the quality and variety of natural products have vastly improved, with better formulas and more sustainable packaging. Robinson encourages consumers to choose cleaner, non-toxic options whenever possible. “We’re constantly surrounded by chemicals. When we have a choice, we should choose what’s better for ourselves and the planet,” she advises.

The Benefits of Going Green

Lindsay Coulter, former “Queen of Green” with the David Suzuki Foundation, notes that natural skincare has multiple advantages beyond clean ingredients. Many products are multipurpose—for example, rosehip oil can moisturize, cleanse, relieve arthritis pain, and even serve as stress-relieving aromatherapy.

Eco-conscious products like shampoo and conditioner bars are also gaining popularity for eliminating packaging altogether. Coulter adds that green beauty doesn’t have to be expensive—DIY options can be affordable and effective.

Empowerment Through Natural Beauty

Lane Edwards, founder of Edmonton-based Pura Botanicals, turned to natural beauty when she developed sensitivities to conventional products during pregnancy. Her brand focuses on plant-based, non-toxic skincare infused with a message of self-love and empowerment.

Many of her products incorporate essential oils, which she says “can really enhance a formula when used mindfully and in small amounts.” While research is ongoing, some studies suggest essential oils can help improve mood, reduce anxiety, and promote restful sleep.

Choosing Safer Sunscreens

When picking sunscreen, check the active ingredients. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are considered safe and natural UV blockers. However, keep in mind that even if the actives are natural, other ingredients in the product may still be synthetic or potentially harmful.

Coulter recommends using the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database
